Dog Cake Smash – San Diego Pet Photographer

Today is a very special day in the Monroe Family!  It is Ruby’s, first birthday!  Ruby is our very pampered, very snuggley, very energetic Vizsla puppy.  (Vizsla? What’s a Vizsla?)

To celebrate, I did what any crazy dog lady / photographer would do – I baked her a cake and photographed a dog cake smash session!  I absolutely love how the pictures turned out and Ruby thoroughly enjoyed the cake!  Don’t worry, she didn’t eat the whole thing…although she did sneak a couple bites later in the day as the remains were sitting unattended on the kitchen counter.

I found the recipe for a dog cake online and just tweaked it a bit to include BACON.  What dog cake could be complete without bacon?!  (And yes, that is a #1 made out of bacon on the top of the cake!) For more dog cake recipes, you can check out these sites:  Here and Here!
There is also a bakery in San Diego that specializes in wheat-free, dairy-free cakes for dogs!  Here!

If you’d like to see the recipe I used, it’s copied at the end of this blog post.

Honestly, this little session was SO much fun!
I’d love to do pet photography for clients in the future!

Ruby’s Dog Cake Recipe:

2 eggs

½ cup of plain yogurt

½ cup cooking oil (or cooled bacon grease!)

½ cup real maple syrup

2 cups shredded carrots

2 cups whole wheat or white flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1.5 cups crumbled bacon (cook a whole package)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a bundt pan

Combine the eggs,  yogurt, oil, and syrup, in a large bowl; blend well. Stir in the carrots and mix thoroughly. Sift together the flour and baking soda and fold into the carrot mixture. Fold in bacon. Spoon cake batter into greased and floured pan.

Bake in preheated oven for approx. 30 minutes.  (Check it at 20.) Let cake cool in pan for 10 minutes; then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Fill the center hole with kibble or dog treats before frosting.

Frosting:

16 oz cream cheese

Remaining yogurt (approx 2 oz.)

Splash of milk if needed.

Blend ingredients together until spreadable consistency.

Add icing coloring if desired.  If you want to try natural coloring, try adding veggie or fruit juices such as beets, carrots, blueberries or spinach instead of the yogurt and milk.  (More info on natural food dyes.)
